The model HE-3-CCR-SSV cryostat is a cryogen-free He-3 system for cooling
samples in vacuum. It uses a two stage mechanical cooler with no
cryogens, to achieve a minimum temperature of approximately 300 mK.
The He-3 gas is permanently stored in the cryostat and is condensed
after initial system cool down. The cryostat's single stage design permits
He-3 condensation without requiring a 1 K pot and associated pump.
An internal charcoal sorption pump is used to reduce the pressure at the
liquid He-3 to cool it down to its terminal temperature
The system includes highly conductive flexible thermal links made from
multiple strands of OFHC copper fine wires, to connect the two
stages of the cooler to two OFHC copper flanges. These are
in turn used to cool to two radiation shields and three heat switches
that control the He-3 condensation, cool down and temperature control.
This design intercepts the vibrations of the cryo-cooler and
significantly reduces the vibrations that may be transmitted to the He-3
stage and any detectors or samples attached to that stage.
The system is supplied with a
complete set of thermometers and heaters to monitor and control the
temperature of the various stages of the cryostat. It also
includes all the necessary valves and pressure gauges for safe reliable
system operation.
