Dilution Refrigerator (DR) Stages Available for Incorporation into Custom-Built DR Systems

Janis Research Company now supplies dilution refrigerator (DR) stages for incorporation into custom-built DR systems. This option offers more experienced researchers the opportunity of combining a reliable Janis DR stage with the user-supplied DR and gas handling system. Standard stages are delivered within three months.

The JDR-100 stage is designed to be installed in small to medium dilution refrigerators with circulation rates up to 200 µmole/second, typically using a large vane pump such as an Alcatel model 2063H or equivalent. Using such a pump with proper pipes and wiring, a base temperature of 15 mK and cooling power of 120 µWatt at 100 mK is typically achieved. These stages are offered at very competitive prices, and are tested and guaranteed to be leak tight at 300 K and 77 K.

The compact and rigid design of these stages insures high internal resonant frequencies and can accommodate heavy loads on the mixing chamber base plate (up to 50 kg axial force). New technology recently developed at Janis Research Company is used to produce ultra-fine silver powder counter-flow heat-exchangers and mixing chamber. All welded stainless steel chambers, UHV grade silver brazing alloys and gold-plated OFHC copper surfaces ensure low out-gassing in high vacuum applications.

The standard configuration of these stages minimize the overall length and include a spiral in-tube heat exchanger as well as six sections of silver powder counter-flow heat exchangers, separated by an intermediate cold plate (ICP). The stages are supplied both with Still and Mixing Chamber (MC) heaters (100 Ohm nominal) and ruthenium oxide thermometers with standard calibration. A still gold-plated copper radiation shield, calibrated MC resistive and paramagnetic thermometers (CMN), as well as superconducting fixed point devices can be ordered separately as options. Special stages can be ordered upon request, similar to the elongated model JDR-100-SP1 unit shown in the photo.
