Ultra Low
Loss Superconducting Magnet System
August 2000
An ultra low loss superconducting magnet and He-3 cryostat system has been
developed for application in low vibration atomic force microscopy. The
system includes a superinsulated liquid nitrogen shielded dewar with a 50 liter
helium capacity with a 9 Tesla superconducting magnet and a He-3 cryostat.
The He-3 cryostat reaches a temperature of 0.27 K, with no pumping at the 1 K
pot, thus eliminating any vibrations that are transmitted from the attached pump
and pumping line. The system has an evaporation rate of 4 liters of liquid
helium per day, with the He-3 cryostat in operation (at 0.27 K), and no current
in the leads. The hold time of the He-3 is longer than 140 hours, with no
added heat load.
